Andrew
stood on the deck of his parents house in Sitka, Alaska. He was supposed to get
married to his boss, Margaret, because she was being deported and she wanted to
stay in the country. He fell in love with her but she confessed to everyone at
the wedding and walked out and left. He got a call from Bergin and Malloy
saying that Margaret had packed up her office and left for Canada. She told
them to make Andrew editor since he had been working for her and knew what to
do. They agreed and he told them he would be back Monday morning. His father
came out and stood with him.
“Your dreams are coming true, son, you
are the boss,” Joe said. Andrew nodded and looked at the ground.
“Yeah,” Andrew said.
“I’m sorry, son, for everything, it’s up
to you to find your calling and you have,” Joe said.
“Yeah,” Andrew said.
“If she loves you, she will come back
when the year is up,” Joe said. Andrew nodded. Joe hugged him. Grace and Annie
stood at the doorway and watched and smiled.
A
year later, Andrew was in the office reading a manuscript when he heard someone
clear their throat and he looked up and saw Margaret standing there.
“Margaret,” Andrew said.
“Andrew, I was able to reapply for a
visa,” Margaret said.
“I see, are you going to follow the
rules this time?” Andrew asked. Margaret nodded.
“Yes, I want to stay here, being in
Canada for a year wasn’t really good at all,” Margaret said.
“If you went through with the marriage,
Margaret, you wouldn’t have to gone back there in the first place,” Andrew said.
Margaret nodded.
“I know, Andrew, and I regret it, I was
scared, okay, of how I was feeling,” Margaret said. Andrew looked at her.
“Scared of what, Margaret,” Andrew said.
“I left because I fell for you, it
scared me, I was so comfortable being alone for a long time that I got used to
it and then everything that happened between us made me feel differently and I
realized that I fell for you and I still feel that way for you,” Margaret said.
“You do?” Andrew asked.
“Yes, I do, I wouldn’t have come back,
Andrew, if I didn’t love you,” Margaret said. Andrew got up and came over to
her and stood in front of her.
“What do you suggest?” Andrew asked.
Margaret grabbed his head and kissed him softly. The kiss deepened. Andrew held
her close as she held onto him. He pulled back and rested his forehead against
hers.
“Wow,” Andrew said.
“I want to be with you, Andrew,”
Margaret said. Andrew smiled and kissed her deeply.
“I never stopped loving you,” Andrew
said. Margaret smiled and hugged him.
“I talked with Bergin and Malloy, they
said you are doing a great job that you and I are co-chiefs,” Margaret said.
“Good,” Andrew said. The phone rang.
Andrew grabbed it.
“Andrew Paxton,” Andrew said. His face
dropped.
“I’ll be right there,” Andrew said. He
hung up and looked at Margaret. She looked at him.
“What is it,” Margaret said.
“It’s Gammy, she’s in the hospital,”
Andrew said.
“Let’s go,” Margaret said. They went out
and told Jordan that he was in charge of the office and went to their
apartments and packed a bag and headed up to Alaska. They landed and saw
Gertrude standing there waiting for them.
“Thanks for meeting us,” Andrew said.
“How’s Annie?” Margaret asked.
“Not good,” Gertrude said. They went to
the hospital. They walked in and saw Joe and Grace by Annie’s bedside.
“Mom, Dad,” Andrew said. They hugged him
and they saw Margaret.
“You came back,” Grace said.
“She came back for me, Mom, she left
because she was scared of how she felt,” Andrew said.
“So you two are together?” Grace asked.
“Yes, it’s for real this time, no
immigration attorney or anything, no rushing to get married, I am going by the
rules this time,” Margaret said.
