Hayley was sitting backstage at a concert. She watched her husband, Nick, talk with his band mates, Brian, AJ, and Howie. Leighanne, Brian’s wife, and Leigh, Howie’s fiancée, came over and sat down. She looked at her hands.

        “Hayley, what’s wrong,” Leighanne said.

        “I think my marriage is ending,” Hayley said.

        “What makes you think that?” Leigh asked.

        “I want to start a family and Nick wants to wait and we had a fight and aren’t speaking much, he won’t sleep in the same room as me,” Hayley said.

        “Maybe you two need to talk,” Leighanne said.

        “I try to but he ignores me, I don’t know what to do,” Hayley said.

        “Just tell him the marriage is over, that will get his attention,” Leighanne said. Hayley sat there looking at Nick. She got up and walked over to the guys. Nick looked at her.

        “What,” Nick said coldly.

        “Just wanted to let you know that I’m filing for a divorce!” Hayley yelled and walked down the hall to the dressing rooms and went into Nick’s dressing room and slammed the door.

Nick sat there looking down the hallway.

        “Nick, what have you done now,” Brian said.

        “He doesn’t want to start a family and Hayley does and they had a fight, they aren’t sleeping in the same room,” Leighanne said.

        “Nick, you married her, do you think you were going to not have kids,” Brian said.

        “I’m not ready yet,” Nick said.

        “Nick, she is your wife, you married her for a reason, didn’t you,” AJ said.

        “Because I loved her more than anything in the world and didn’t want to be without her and wanted to be with her forever,” Nick said.

        “She thinks you are trying to get out of the marriage,” Howie said.

        “I don’t want out of the marriage,” Nick said.

        “Then talk to her!” Leighanne said. Nick went down to his dressing room and went in and saw Hayley lying on the couch. She looked at him and groaned.

        “What now,” Hayley said. Nick slammed the door and glared at her.

        “I can’t believe you, running away from our marriage, wanting a divorce,” Nick said.

        “You seemed to want nothing to do with me,” Hayley said.

        “Hayley, if I wanted nothing to do with you, I would have filed for divorce, but I haven’t, I don’t want out of the marriage, I want you in my life forever, okay, I love you, couples fight all the time, but once the smoke clears, things are back to normal, if you had given me time, I would have came around and talked to you and worked on our marriage, look, let’s talk, okay,” Nick said. Hayley sat up so Nick can sit beside her.

        “I’m sorry for being a jerk, I just was scared that if we had kids, I wouldn’t be a good father,” Nick said.

        “Nick, you would be a great father, you are good with kids, I have seen you with all the kids at concerts, I have watched you at meet and greets, you are great with kids,” Hayley said.

        “I know that, but I’m talking about my job, I’ll be away all the time, I wouldn’t be a normal father,” Nick said.

        “Oh,” Hayley said.

        “I know you want kids, I do, too, but the guys and I are so popular right now that we are in demand for tours, interviews and so on, there isn’t time for anything else, that is why we asked you, Leigh, and Leighanne to go with us everywhere because we wouldn’t be home all the time,” Nick said. Hayley nodded and stared at her hands.

        “I’m sorry for pressuring you, I should have understood,” Hayley said. Nick pulled her in his lap and hugged her.

        “I love you, okay, and I never want to lose you, ever, you are my life, my heart,” Nick said. Hayley smiled and kissed him deeply. Nick groaned and laid them on the couch.

        “Who cares about the timing, whatever happens, happens,” Nick said pulling her clothes and his off and he made love to her. They laid there holding each other.

        “Nicky, do you mean you want to start trying for kids,” Hayley said.

        “I want lots of babies with you, you are right, I will be a great father no matter what,” Nick said. Hayley smiled and they made love again.

Three months later, Hayley stood in the bathroom waiting for her pregnancy test. The timer went off and she looked at the test and she sat down. Leighanne came in.

        “Hayley,” Leighanne said.

        “Negative, I’ve taken three tests, all negative,” Hayley said.

        “Maybe you should go to the doctor,” Leighanne said.

        “I guess I should,” Hayley said. They went downstairs just as Nick and Brian came in. Nick saw Hayley’s face. He went to her.

        “Honey, what’s wrong,” Nick said.

        “We need to talk,” Hayley said. They went into the kitchen.

        “Honey,” Nick said.

        “I think something’s wrong with me,” Hayley said.

        “What do you mean,” Nick said.

        “I know we’ve been trying for months to get pregnant, nothing has happened yet, I just took three tests, all negative,” Hayley said.

        “Oh man,” Nick said. He hugged her close.

        “I’m going to the doctor to see what’s wrong with me,” Hayley said.

        “I’m going with you, if that’s okay,” Nick said. Hayley smiled.

        “I want you to go, I want the support,” Hayley said.

        “Let’s go,” Nick said. They went to the doctor. The doctor ran tests and they went to the doctor’s office. Hayley and Nick sat there on the couch, holding hands. Dr. Kelly came in with the results. She sat down and looked at Nick and Hayley.

        “Hayley, I have looked at these tests and the reason you haven’t been able to become pregnant is because you are unable to have children,” Dr. Kelly said.

        “What,” Hayley said.

        “What do you mean unable to have children, Dr. Kelly,” Nick said.

        “It means that, she is unable to produce the eggs, Nick, there is nothing wrong with you,” Dr. Kelly said. Hayley sat there.

        “So you are saying that I’m not normal, that I will never have a child of my own,” Hayley said.

        “I’m sorry, Hayley, I wish I had better news,” Dr. Kelly said. Hayley got up and went out the door and went out to the car. Nick came out and hugged her. Hayley pulled away.

        “You won’t want me now, I can’t give you a child!” Hayley cried. Nick shook his head and pulled her close and kissed her hard on the mouth.

        “Just because we got bad news, it doesn’t mean I don’t love you any less, I didn’t marry you to have kids, I married you to be with you forever and always, til death do us part, for better for worse, sickness and health, we will find a way to have kids,” Nick said. Hayley cried and buried her face in Nick’s chest and sobbed. They went home and went in and saw Brian and Leighanne in the living room. They stood up.

        “What happened?” Brian asked.

        “Dr. Kelly ran tests, according to the tests, Hayley is not able to have kids, ever,” Nick said.

        “Oh my god,” Leighanne said.

        “What does that mean, how is that possible?” Brian asked.

        “It means that I can’t produce the eggs, my ovaries won’t produce, I’m not normal, I can’t give Nick a child,” Hayley said going upstairs. Nick ran his hands through his hair.

        “That is so not fair of that happening, you two deserve to have kids,” Brian said.

        “I know, but it can’t be done,” Nick said.

        “Nick, there is time to figure things out,” Leighanne said.

        “I don’t know what to do,” Nick said.

        “I’ll donate,” Leighanne said.

        “What,” Nick said.

        “Find out if she can carry a child, if she can’t create one herself, there can be help getting her pregnant,” Leighanne said.

        “I’ll call Dr. Kelly,” Nick said picking up the phone and talked with Dr. Kelly. He hung up.

        “She said the only way for a child is adoption or a surrogate mother, she said that since Hayley can’t create a child, she can’t carry it,” Nick said. He held his head in his hands. Leighanne sat down next to him.

        “I will give her a child,” Leighanne said.

        “What,” Nick said.

        “Leighanne will be the surrogate mother,” Brian said.

        “But don’t you want to have kids of your own?” Nick asked.

        “We will eventually,” Brian said.

        “We can’t ask you two to wait to have a child just to give us one,” Nick said.

        “Nick, we want to, you are my little brother, we love you guys,” Brian said. Hayley came downstairs.

        “We’ll do it, let’s do it,” Hayley said. Nick got up and hugged her.

        “Are you guys sure about this?” Nick asked. Brian and Leighanne nodded.

        “We are sure about this,” Brian said.

Three months later, Leighanne was pregnant with Nick and Hayley’s child.  Leighanne and Brian moved next door to Hayley and Nick. Hayley was sitting in the kitchen, sorting the mail. Brian came in and looked at her.

        “Hey B,” Hayley said.

        “Hey,” Brian said. She looked at Brian.

        “What happened,” Hayley said.

        “Hayley, Leighanne just had a miscarriage, she lost the baby, Dr. Kelly said the miscarriage was really bad that now Leighanne can’t have kids,” Brian said. Hayley sat there. She covered her face in her hands and cried. Brian hugged her.

        “Oh god, I’m so sorry, it’s my fault now that Leighanne can’t give you a child,” Hayley cried.

        “Hayley, it’s not your fault, no one knew this would happen, we wanted to do this for you guys, because we knew that if the situation was reversed, you would do the same,” Brian said.

        “Yeah, now Nick and I can’t have a child and now you and Leighanne can’t,” Hayley said crying. Brian hugged her tight. Nick came in.

        “What’s going on,” Nick said.

        “Um, I just came to tell you guys that Leighanne had a miscarriage,” Brian said.

        “Oh god,” Nick said kneeling down next to Hayley and taking her in his arms.

        “That’s only half of it, Dr. Kelly said the miscarriage was so bad that Leighanne can’t have kids,” Brian said. Hayley sobbed in Nick’s arms.

        “Brian, I’m so sorry, I should have never let you guys do that, now I ruined your chance for kids,” Hayley cried.

        “Hayley, sweetie, it’s not your fault, Leighanne wanted to do it for you, it was her choice, you didn’t force her, we can adopt or have a surrogate, Leighanne just can’t carry a child,” Brian said.

        “Now I won’t have a child, maybe this is god’s way of telling us that we don’t deserve a child,” Hayley said.

        “We can adopt, baby, there are kids out there who need good homes,” Nick said.

        “But they won’t go for it, Nick, you are a Backstreet Boy, you don’t have a normal job, you are famous, too much risk for a child, face it, Nick, we are childless forever,” Hayley said. She went upstairs. Nick sat back. Brian looked at him.

        “What do I do, Frick, nothing I say will make her happy, she really wants a child,” Nick said.

        “I have an idea,” Brian said.

Four months later, Nick came into the house and found Hayley sitting at the kitchen table. He put a picture of an ultrasound in front of her. She looked at it.

        “Nicky, what is this,” Hayley said.

        “Our baby, Leighanne’s sister is the surrogate, she was implanted with our baby, well, a fertilized egg from Leighanne and me, Brian’s idea, wanted to surprise you,” Nick said kissing her cheek. Hayley looked at him.

        “You mean, we’ll have a baby,” Hayley said.

        “Yes, we will, and so will Brian and Leighanne, Kristin is three months pregnant with their baby, Leighanne’s sister is four months,” Nick said.

        “And so far so good?” Hayley asked.

        “Yes,” Nick said. Hayley got up and hugged him.

        “I love you, Nicky, so much, I thought it would never happen, that we would never have kids,” Hayley said.

        “We are having a baby, honey,” Nick said. Hayley hugged. The phone rang. Nick picked it up.

        “Hello, hi Dr. Kelly, hold on, honey,” Nick said.

        “Dr. Kelly, what, are you sure, are you positive, oh my gosh, thank you so much for calling, bye,” Hayley said. She hung up and looked at Nick. She jumped on Nick and kissed him deeply.

        “Honey, what is it?” Nick said.

        “After all this time, Dr. Kelly went over my tests again, I can have kids, we can have kids!” Hayley said.

        “You mean, we can have one of our own,” Nick said. Hayley nodded. They hugged. Nick called Brian. He and Leighanne came over.

        “What’s up,” Brian said.

        “Dr. Kelly just called, she went over Hayley’s tests again, Hayley can have kids after all,” Nick said. Brian and Leighanne looked at each other.

        “So you can have kids, and they found this out after Leighanne’s sister became pregnant with the child you wanted,” Brian said.

        “Yeah, we wished she would have discovered the mistake before that,” Nick said.

        “So what about the baby she’s carrying,” Brian said.

        “We are keeping things as they are, once she has the baby, we will start trying for a baby,” Nick said. Hayley smiled and hugged Nick.

Five months later, Leighanne’s sister, Anna, gave birth to a baby girl. Nick and Hayley were with her and she handed the baby to them and smiled.

        “Thanks, Anna,” Nick said.

        “You’re welcome, Brian and Leighanne told me the news that you two can have kids of your own, so go enjoy being parents and get to work on another baby,” Anna said.

Two days later, the baby was released from the hospital and Nick and Hayley took her home. They named her Emily Ann Carter. Nick and Hayley began to try for another baby. Their wish came true three months later when Hayley received the news that she was pregnant. Hayley stood outside and looked at the sky. Nick came out and hugged her from behind and rested his chin on her shoulder and rested his hands on her stomach.

        “Em’s sleeping, she is so gorgeous, she is the perfect baby,” Nick said.

        “I know,” Hayley said.

        “I can’t wait for the new baby, we’ll have the perfect family,” Nick said.

        “I know, I love you, Nicky,” Hayley said.

        “I love you, too, baby,” Nick said kissing her neck.

        “When I first thought that we couldn’t have children, I felt so incomplete, but not anymore, I have you, I have Emily, and our unborn child, I am complete,” Hayley said. Nick smiled and kissed her softly and held her as they watched the ocean.
